Have something for the Republic?
The Culture Republic is interested in the people, ideas, work and conversations shaping contemporary African and diasporic culture.
We are always looking for new voices, unexpected perspectives and work that gives us a reason to look twice.
If you have a story to tell, an idea to explore, or work you think belongs here, we'd like to hear from you.
TCR publishes work across culture, art, fashion, music, photography, writing and beyond.
We are particularly interested in:
Essays and personal writing
Cultural criticism and commentary
Interviews and conversations
Profiles and features
Photography and visual stories
Fashion and style
Music and music culture
Art and creative practice
Cultural histories and archival discoveries
Emerging artists and practitioners
Stories from across Africa and its diaspora
These are starting points, not limitations.
If your idea doesn't fit neatly into a category but you believe it belongs in the Republic, pitch it anyway.
If you have an idea rather than a finished piece, send us a pitch.
A good pitch should tell us:
WHAT
What is the story or idea?
WHY
Why is this worth telling now?
WHO
Who or what is at the centre of it?
HOW
What form do you imagine it taking — an essay, interview, profile, visual story, criticism, or something else?
Keep your pitch focused. We don't need the entire article at this stage.
For interviews or profiles, include the subject's name and a brief explanation of why you think they would make a compelling TCR story.
You can also send completed work for consideration.
Please include:
Your name
A short bio
The title of the work
The work itself or a link to it
A short description of the piece
Relevant social media or portfolio links
For visual work, please include a selection of the images rather than sending an unnecessarily large archive.
Anyone.
You don't need to be an established writer, artist, photographer or cultural practitioner to pitch to TCR.
We are interested in emerging voices as much as established ones.
What matters is the work, the idea and the perspective behind it.
TCR is an independent publication with an editorial point of view.
We read submissions with curiosity, but publication is not guaranteed simply because a piece is well made. We consider whether a work fits our current editorial interests, whether it contributes something meaningful to the conversation, and whether it belongs within the wider world we're building at TCR.
We may suggest edits, restructuring or other changes before publication.
Submitting work to TCR means you are open to an editorial conversation about the piece.
Please make sure that:
Your work is original.
Do not submit work that has been copied or published elsewhere without the appropriate rights or permission.
You have permission to submit the work.
If your submission includes photographs, artwork, quotations, recordings or other material created by someone else, make sure you have the necessary permission.
Your pitch is specific.
“Can I write for TCR?” tells us very little. Tell us what you want to write about.
You have checked your work.
We don't expect perfection, but please proofread before sending.
Every submission is reviewed by the editorial team.
If we're interested, we'll get in touch to discuss the piece and any next steps.
If you haven't heard from us within 7 days, you are welcome to follow up using the editorial contact listed on our Contact page.
Please understand that a response does not always mean acceptance, and that we may not be able to provide detailed feedback on every submission.
TCR is building an archive in motion.
That means we're interested not only in what is already being talked about, but in what deserves to be talked about next.
Don't worry about making your idea sound bigger than it is.
Tell us what you saw.
Tell us what you made.
Tell us what you can't stop thinking about.
We'll take it from there.
Send your pitch or completed work to our Editorial contact.
